The Need For The Institute

Diabetes is an escalating worldwide health issue that can, in part, be addressed by collaboration within the healthcare community. The Johnson & Johnson Diabetes Institute, Paris, aims to be part of the diabetes care solution by working together with you, your support organisations and carers. There is a lot to be done.

The Statistics

Statistics are useful in providing a top-level view of the problem and burden of diabetes.

  • More than 240 million people worldwide have diabetes and the International Diabetes Federation (IDF) expects the number to reach 380 million by 2025.
  • Diabetes is expected to cause 3.8 million deaths worldwide in 2007, about 6% of total global mortality, or about the same as HIV/AIDS. Based on WHO figures on years of life lost per person dying of diabetes, this equates to more than 25 million years of life lost each year.
  • In many countries in Asia, the Middle East, Oceania and the Caribbean, diabetes affects as many as 20% or more of the adult population. These countries bear the brunt of the major increase in diabetes prevalence but also the burden of the costs. By 2025, it is likely that the majority of adults with diabetes in some countries will be aged 45-64.
  • Diabetes is the leading cause of kidney failure and new blindness in adults, as well as leg and foot amputations. It also significantly increases the risk of cardiovascular disease and cardiac deaths.
  • In 2007, the world is estimated to have spent at least €150 billion to treat and prevent diabetes and its complications. By 2025, this lower-bound estimate will exceed €196 billion.

The management of diabetes represents a challenge for both the patient and their healthcare professional. Our goal is to establish Johnson & Johnson Diabetes Institute as a home for the diabetes family, and a trusted place of training that becomes a catalyst for innovation, improved care, and better patient outcomes worldwide.
