Frequently Asked Questions

What need does the Institute fill that isn't being met today?
Healthcare professionals working in diabetes are being tested at every level to keep on top of the global epidemic that is diabetes. The Johnson & Johnson Diabetes Institutes aim to be another tool in the armamentarium - the Institutes are here to help, guided by you, the diabetes community.

We know that the human and economic burden of this disease is staggering. While the public health community is focusing on a range of efforts to improve diabetes outcomes, these efforts will only be successful if all members of the health team work together.

The objective of the Johnson & Johnson Diabetes Institutes is to facilitate this collaboration and to contribute to enhancing patients' quality of life and patient outcomes by providing healthcare professionals with access to the latest information and practical innovations.
What will the training consist of?
The objective of the Johnson & Johnson Diabetes Institutes is to contribute to enhancing patients' quality of life and patient outcomes by providing healthcare professionals with access to the latest information and practical innovations.

The curriculum varies by location and is tailored to the needs of the healthcare professionals in each region. In general, courses emphasise ways to use existing diabetes tools and technologies in real time and innovative practice models to solve patient problems.

Courses currently offered are on Therapeutic Patient Education.

Who develops the curriculum?
In each country, region or continent, the Johnson & Johnson Diabetes Institute works with leading diabetes organisations, public health institutes and physicians to identify the key topic areas for education. Then, an independent faculty including internationally recognised diabetes experts will participate in the design of the curriculum.

Who are the faculty members?
Individual classes are run by faculty members based on their expertise in relevant clinical and non-clinical areas.
How long is the training?
The curriculum varies by region. However, in general, the training is conducted over a two or three day period and involves both classroom instruction and group work.
What types of healthcare professionals can attend the Institutes?
While the decision about which professionals to train differs from country to country, the Institutes focus on those professionals who are the most likely to work directly with the patient -physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants and diabetes educators - with the goal of making the overall healthcare team more effective and efficient across a greater number of patients.
Wouldn't it be better to support the professional education programmes conducted by academic centres and the diabetes organisations?
Our goal is to augment and complement existing efforts by working with those healthcare professionals on the front lines of diabetes care, such as physicians, diabetes educators, nurses, and physician assistants. Combined with the courses offered by academic centres and the leading diabetes organisations, the goal of the Institutes is to provide training that helps increase the effectiveness of the entire healthcare team in meeting the needs of patients.
What role do your own products play in the training?
Of course, we acknowledge that Johnson & Johnson companies market many products such as insulin pumps, blood glucose monitoring systems and software programs - and these are an integral part of effective diabetes therapy.

However, the Institutes are definitely not covert or overt product marketing opportunities. The overarching goal is to provide the latest information and practical skills to enable healthcare professionals to help their patients live healthier, longer lives.
What do you expect healthcare professionals to do once they complete the course?
Ultimately, our goal is to help graduates of the Institute improve patient outcomes by translating the skills and information they acquire at the Institute into their practices and their communities. Our hope is that graduates will think and act differently to manage their patients more effectively. This may include re-thinking how their practices are organised, using technology more effectively, and applying new insights into patient treatment.

A part of this website will be devoted in the future, to the Johnson & Johnson Diabetes Institutes Alumni ,where there will be an opportunity to continue sharing best practice with fellow Institute graduates.
When were the facilities open?
In Paris, the Johnson & Johnson Diabetes Institute construction work was completed in the beginning of June 2008. The Institute was officially launched on September 25, 2008.
Where are the facilities located?
In addition to a centre in Paris , there are currently Institutes in Tokyo (Japan), Beijing (China) and in the United States, located in Milpitas, California, a short drive from San Francisco.
Do you plan to reach out beyond the brick and mortar facilities with distance learning?
Our immediate priority is to develop and deliver courses in our physical Institute facilities. However, our future plans call for an expanded reach within countries and across the globe via distance learning offerings.
How much does it cost to attend the programme?
In most cases there will be no cost to the healthcare professional and the Johnson & Johnson Diabetes Institute will underwrite the costs for healthcare professionals to attend, including travel and accommodation.

However, in some countries, legal and regulatory requirements may prevent us from paying such costs on behalf of attending healthcare professionals.
